Care Sheet For Puppies at Toy Yoyo Acres
I have been breeding and showing Pomeranians since 1996. There are NO teacup or Toy Pomeranian or Chihuahua. Breed standard for the Pomeranian reads 3 to 7 pounds, where 4 to 6 is preferred. Breed standard for Chihuahua reads under 6 pounds. Occasionally we have tiny Puppies that may not make the 4 pound size. We offer these tiny babies for sale on a PET only contract.
Things you must know about owning a tiny Toy Breed Puppy. They require attention at all times. You must feed them a meat based dog food where meat is listed as the top of three ingredients. Corn is a filler and has no nutrients. The protein needs to be high, about 24 to 28. These little puppies need all the nutrient they can get. We also let our babies have puppy formula whenever they wish. You can find this at a feed store or Walmart. I prefer the goat milk powder formula and mix it when needed. Our babies eat Bil Jack picky No More. Our Adults eat Diamond Lamb n Rice. We feed this because The kibble size is tiny and the dogs love it. We also give them cooked chicken twice a day. You can buy chicken with water in a can like tuna fish. Make sure the formula and chicken is fresh and not starting to spoil. Dry food is down at all times.
You must watch your puppy for any possible signs of less activity and energy. Do remember that this is a newborn baby still, so they play for an hour then sleep for three hours. But less activity, wobbly, off balanced, non alert may be a sign that their sugar has gone too low. You can use a diabetics sugar tester sold at any pharmacy by clipping a toenail for blood and testing it. Sugar level should be above 75 at all times. If it drops below this, you must give them some form of sugar on their gums, Kyro syrup, pancake syrup, human diabetic gel sold at the pharmacy. After giving them a few drops of sugar, wait 10 to 15 minutes and try to get them to drink puppy formula. You may have to put it in a dropper or syringe and trickle it on their tongue to get them to start licking it. Within the next half hour, try to get the puppy to eat, cat can food, cooked chicken, melted cheese, baby food.. Anything to get him to eat to help raise his/her blood sugar. Take your puppy to the vet ASAP, low blood sugar usually is a sign that there is something else going on with the puppy’s health. If you have one that’s sugar keeps dropping and is not maintaining, leave chicken down at all times. He/She should nipple on it several times through the hour and this helps to maintain the level. AGAIN, vet care is needed immediately. NutriCal or another brand similar is excellent source of sugar, calories, etc. It usually comes in a tube like toothpaste. This is something I recommend keeping at home at all times. Any time a pup is in stress, traveling, or not feeling well, this comes in handy. Hypoglycemia is not covered by my guarantee.
You must also take extreme care that the puppy is not dropped or stepped on. Don’t let him on high surface we he could jump down. Your puppy also is so tiny that he is very susceptible to catching things such as parvo, kennel cough, cold, and viruses. We recommend only letting him on the ground in known places. Do not take him everywhere where there could be viruses. Do not pass him around and let everyone hold him. Once he gets to about 6 months old, his immune system should be established well. Seller is not responsible for any accidental injuries or neglect to the puppy.
We take special pride in our babies and start the weaning process and separation when we feel each puppy is ready. You can watch our videos on Facebook on how we prepare puppies for their new home. We try to do things gradually. Between weaning, worming, shots, separation, new owners, and then travel when it is time for vets or go to new home, your puppy is going through a lot in just a few weeks of time. Do not expect to housebreak your puppy the first week you get him/her. Give them a chance to get use to the changes first.
Puppies are started on crate training. Some learn easy to housebreak. We clean up puppies messes immediately. Puppies that are raised in dirty closed area learn it is ok to bathroom in the same area they sleep in, as dogs naturally do not do this. This is also why some puppies eat feces. So it is important to keep your puppies area clean at all times. Just as important to have fresh clean water and food.
Fleas are a nuisance in many southern states. We do not like chemicals. We use natural remedies. We wash in baby shampoo. We brush and comb daily. I highly recommend that you research all flea remedies before using any. I am NOT going to recommend anything, specially if it is chemicals.
